What does mental health means?

When we talk about being mentally healthy, we talk about that person who is strong enough to handle any emotional disaster, any mental issue or any problem in the life in a healthy & positive way. Here we are talking about mental health in children. First of all we should know what mental health actually means. Mental health is all about being able to handle situations and traumas in positive and calmer way, being emotionally and mentally strong and having a positive attitude towards life. Children who are brought up in safe and positive environment tend to have a healthy and positive attitude towards life. Being mentally fit helps in their physical growth too. Mentally healthy children are successful in every field of their life and also they enjoy positive quality of life.
 
But today when we look around ourselves, we find that many children are going through some or other mental trauma. One of the main reason today is being confined to their homes 24 hours a day because of this covid situation. They are not able to go out, they are not able to meet their friends. Most of the time they have to sit in front of laptops and mobiles to study. This is not only hampering their physical growth but also their mental growth, which in result is increasing the cases of ADHD, behaviour problems, anxiety and depression in the kids
 
Most of the times parents are not able to understand actually what is happening with their kids and even kids are not able to define actually what is happening with them. Parents often mistook their child's anxiety and depression as attention seeking syndrome. sometimes external help is required but most of the times parents are the best healers.
 
How to know if a child has a behaviour issue or going through depression?
 
They start blaming others. They refuse to follow rules and start questioning authority. They start Arguing and throwing temper tantrums. It becomes difficult for them to handle their frustration and irritation They like to spend time alone. Most of the time they are confined to themselves. They don't even like to spend time with their friends or to talk to them
They often have the feeling that there is no love and excitement in their life and they are unwanted. They even consider themselves useless
 
How to look after your child's mental health?
 
Talk to them. Spend some quality time with them. Ask them about their feelings. Listen to them with patience, no matter how stupid topic they are talking about. Spend some time in playing indoor games with them. Engage them in their favourite activity. Keep track of their mental well-being. Think about what they want in their life, what they want to achieve not what you want them to achieve. And last but not the least, never impose yourself or your wishes on your child.
 
Always remember, communication is the best way and solution to every problem. A little care and alertness can keep your child away from all mental illnesses. Never fight in front of your children. Keep your children free from emotional trauma by providing them love and care that they actually deserve.
